Can You Date At Work

Can You Date At Work Cover
Professional Dating?

Sure, date your coworkers That won't cause endless awkwardness when things don't go right

Dating a coworker seems convenient. It is easy to get to know the people that you see and interact with everyday. It's unavoidable that you will become comfortable and close. Speaking of unavoidable, that is exactly what co-workers are, so careful when you decide to make things personal. When you like someone you work with, it seems like a good idea to date them. But is it?

As much as adults should be able to act like adults, when you're dealing with intimacy, emotions are strong and sometimes (most times?) irrational. Love can be messy. It may be best to keep your love life out of the office.

THE THIRD PLACE

According to Ray Oldenburg, a very influential sociologist, most people have three important places in their lives. The first place is home. The second place is work and the third place is a social setting. The third place is a where creative interactions happen. Typically the third place could be a caf'e, bar, community center or wherever you hang out. It is where people can go daily to meet and socialize.

Dating at work confuses the second place and the third place. People need diversity in their lives. Yes, some work relationships are successful, but it's not a recommended location to search for a date. Dating at work can be sloppy. Not to mention, if you end up in a relationship with your co-worker, you will be with your lover all day, every day. People need breaks from each other to think of things to say. They need to have time apart where they miss each other and crave a rendez-vous. Having a third place in your life to meet new people and break up the monotony is important.

WHERE IS YOUR THIRD PLACE?

Now that so much of the world can be accessed online, a third place doesn't have to be at a caf'e or bar. A website, forum or online chat gallery can be considered a third place where one is able to socialize and meet new people.

Bottom line; don't try to date your co-workers. You won't regret the decision.
