10 Best Date Movies

10 Best Date Movies Cover
Okay, so you've made it past the first hurdle - you've met someone, you've had dinner, drinks, or perhaps gone to see a movie, and you've decided that you're interested enough to want to learn more.

For the next step, you want a movie night that will help you get to know your date, that will allow you to explore some shared interests, but that will also keep the romantic mood going. The good news is that there's no shortage of films in virtually any genre that will allow you to do all these things.

BEST DATE MOVIES #10

AFTER HOURS

Normally, MARTIN SCORCESE isn't synonymous with date movies, but this smart, funny tale of a single everyman (Griffin Dunne) trying to connect with women and falling into more and more disastrous circumstances over the course of a single night is as engaging as it is underrated.

BEST DATE MOVIES #9

JACKIE BROWN

This understated QUENTIN TARANTINO gem has a strong central female character for the ladies, plenty of action (and SAMUEL L. JACKSON) for the guys, snappy dialogue, a clutch of Hollywood stars, and more plot twists than an expert ski hill. It also has a quiet romantic undercurrent throughout that'll leave you smiling.

BEST DATE MOVIES #8

CLOVERFIELD

Perhaps you and your new flame want something a little harder edged? Have you already discovered that _Alien_ changed your lives? Have you had the_ Star Trek_ vs. _Star Wars_ debate? Okay, maybe things haven't gotten to that point, but this aliens-attack-earth number is actually a great bridge between action, sci-fi and romance. After all, the premise of the film's plot is that the hero is defying the dangers of a collapsing New York under alien invasion to rescue the woman he's loved in secret for years. Light on gore, but very heavy on action, this one has a lot of great moments for grabbing hold of your date's hand.

BEST DATE MOVIES #7

THE GRADUATE

Once upon a time, it was possible to believe that you just went to college or university like your parents told you and then your entire life path would be clear, like the sun rising on a summer day. Of course, that's a myth and what's really important are the things you choose for yourself, rather than those that are forced on you. In the case of _The Graduate_, that means choosing the person you really want to be with, even when the rest of your life seems to conspire against you.

BEST DATE MOVIES #6

OH BROTHER WHERE ART THOU

One of the COEN BROTHERS' lighter excursions, it has at its heart the tale of a man desperately trying to win back his estranged wife. The story is based on Homer's _Odyssey_ (a smart, well-read date will catch onto that), but it's hardly a dry, classical study. There are some truly hilarious moments, in the bizarre vein of many Coen films (like JOHN GOODMAN as a modern day Cyclops), but there is also enough substance to give you something to talk about afterward.
