Improve Confidence Step By Step

Improve Confidence Step By Step Cover
One great way to help you improve confidence is to make a resolution that you will do something every day to increase your self confidence, no matter how small. Doing one small task each day is far less daunting than throwing yourself into attacking a huge problem all at once.

For example, if you are not confident at public speaking, it is tempting to try to ‘throw yourself in at the deep end’ by making yourself give a speech in front of a large crowd. Whilst this may work for some people, most folks will feel terrified at the prospect and if things don’t go well they will be very hard on themselves and perceive it as a failure, thus lowering their self confidence further.

A far better approach might be setting yourself a task to visit the library or book store and find a book about public speaking. The next few steps might be reading the book and completing any exercises it contains. Following this you may choose to prepare a speech and deliver it to a trusted friend or member of your family. From here on you may choose to deliver speeches to groups of friends or even join a club or organization. By breaking it down this way, each step seems a lot more achievable and will naturally lead on to the next step as you gain confidence in this area.

Identify areas in your life where you need to improve confidence and make a plan to do one small thing every day. For example, if you lack confidence in your appearance, plan to have a beauty treatment, take some exercise or look at yourself in the mirror and say ‘I look great!’ Make each daily step slightly harder than the last- for instance, if you lack confidence whilst talking to people you may start by smiling at a stranger the first day, saying hello the next day, and gradually work up to having a full conversation. Tackling your self confidence issues a little at a time like this will prevent you from feeling overwhelmed.

If you fail to complete a step, don’t be too hard on yourself- look at yourself in the mirror, give yourself a big smile and say out loud, ‘I can do this!’ Adjust your plan to ensure that the task is completed the next day. Be prepared to adjust your plan as required, and allow yourself some flexibility; if a certain step seems to difficult right now, can it be broken down into a further two or three steps? Who or what resource might you need to help you?

Make sure you celebrate each small step as it is achieved and your self confidence will grow a little more every day.
