Okay, I admit it. I found Mitch on Facebook. He popped up as a "mutual friend" or whatever they're called. He looked gorgeous in his profile picture. So I messaged him and told him. We wrote back and forth for about ten days. He seemed depressed, revealing a lot about his inner turmoil and then questioning why the hell he was telling me about it. He claimed he wanted to go to law school but, at 33, felt it might be too late. He was spending his days popping Ritalin, he admitted, so he can focus on studying for his LSAT. I was a little concerned about the dark tone of his writing but I was curious to know more.
On our first date, Mitch told me about his little sister from his dad's second marriage. He was there for her birth seven years ago and he said he was looking forward to being a dad. He was sweet. We kissed. It was nice. Waiting outside for a cab with him that night, one passed us by. He threw his hands up in the air and said with a smile: "What are we? Black?" Hmmm, that's a weird joke, I thought. Seriously?
