Love Fool

Love Fool Image
This weekend I realized that I need to start making my travel plans for Wizard World Chicago. As I was thinking about booking a hotel room, I thought back to last year. I bought a ton of romance books during the show and one evening I was going over my purchases while relaxing in the hotel, as I usually do. I started reading one of the romance books I had bought, and I was totally sucked in to the story right away. I was able to get to about the third page when some friends came by to go to dinner. I put the book away, not thinking to somehow denote where I left off. That particular book got lost in the shuffle and mixed in with the rest of my purchases.

Thinking about booking a hotel the other day jogged my memory about reading this particular story partway last summer, so I decided to look for it. I couldn't remember what the cover looked like, but thankfully, I found it last night! Behold... the awesome power of "A Million Laughs in Every Kiss."

This story comes from Young Romance #167 (August/September 1970), and it is one of my favorites for its sheer goofiness and because the accompanying art is really exquisite. I am not positive who drew it (the story is unsigned), but I think it looks to be the work of Tony DeZuniga of Jonah Hex fame.

"A Million Laughs in Every Kiss" introduces us to Nan, an attractive young woman dating Tom, who constantly clowns around. After planting a tack on a park bench for her to sit on, he fools her into thinking that the police are after them. The voice of the police turns out to be a tape recorded message in his car. After each prank he plays on her, a fight erupts. The (almost) final straw comes when he embarrasses her at a Halloween party.

Several weeks go by and Nan refuses to talk to Tom, but one cold winter night she sees him standing outside her house. Nan invites him in, and makes him promise to never play another trick on her again.

As time goes by, Nan thinks that Tom has overcome his playful nature. Out of the corner of a panel on the eighth page emerges the... drum roll please... engagement ring! But, as one might suspect, Tom's impulses are stronger than his word. Out of the ring box jumps a jack-in-the-box type clown figure.

Nan is livid and as "an ice cold fury" comes over her, she tells Tom she never wants to see him again. Never is a short time in romance comics though (approximately a week), and after finding herself consumed by questions of what made him break his promise, she goes to his apartment. The landlord lets Nan in (I think that is illegal nowadays!) and as she goes to wake Tom up, she notices the real engagement ring on a table.

Now you can see why I had to finish reading this story! I was dying to find out Tom's reason for being such a goofball. I would have just chalked it up to a personality quirk, but obviously Nan wouldn't have gone for that. They embrace, with happy and relieved looks on their faces and once again, all is well in the land of Young Romance.

I think it's a pretty good lighthearted story and the art is killer, especially that splash page. I also really like the coloring scheme of the warm purples enhanced by the cold blues. I was ecstatic that I was able to find it rather quickly so that I could share it with all of you!

Why Men Shouldnt Pay For Dates

Why Men Shouldnt Pay For Dates Cover
Times have changed big-time. Women no longer hang out in the kitchen preparing hot meals and taking care of babies. No. Sisters are doing it for themselves. Women are earning their keep and enjoying this sense of independence that their great-grandmothers never had the opportunity to bask in.

But with all this freedom comes some drawbacks - men and women are still at a point where we're not sure what proper etiquette is and what is borderline offensive. But then, is it really fair of women to pick and choose which traditions benefit them?

And so I introduce to you the reasons why men shouldn't pay for dates.

FIRST DATE PAY

Okay, so I'm a sucker for the first date. Even if Miss Knee Pads practically begged me for the first date, I am going to pay. I blame it on my mother, but that's the way it's going to work. Even if she gets offended and never calls. Even if she remarks that it doesn't mean I'm getting laid. I will always pay for that first date. And pray she doesn't order the lobster.

So that said, of course, the first date is always the man's responsibility. But come that second date. Whoa there, Knee Pads, you better bust out that MasterCard of yours because the $10 lychee martini and the lychee that came with it are not on me.

WHY MEN SHOULDNT PAY FOR DATES #1 WOMEN EARN MONEY

Women are earning a helluva lot more money; some even earn more than men, so why is it on men to foot the bill on a dinner date, or any type of date for that matter? Men shouldn't pay for dates because women can not only afford to foot the bill, they can even pay for our cab ride home after the night's over. Okay, maybe I'm pushing it here.

The point is that women make some sweet coin and relying on us to pay for date after date is simply ludicrous.

WHY MEN SHOULDNT PAY FOR DATES #2 WOMEN MAKE FIRST MOVES

If date #1 is coming to a close and she moves in, grabs my hand and says "I had such a lovely time, why don't we get together again next Saturday night for dinner?" you can bet I'm expecting this lovely lady to cue the waiter for the check on that second date.

Why? Well, it all comes down to logic. If I invite you out to a Lakers game and you show up, and then after the game's over I say, "Donna, you owe me $200. Will that be cash or check?" you'd be hella pissed. My invitation obviously left you with the assumption that I was treating, right? Welcome to date #2.

If Miss Sex Eyes decides that she wants to further seduce me with her well-tweezed eyebrows over dinner for a second time and she asks me out, then yeah, she better pay. Especially if I shelled out for the first one.

If a chick asks me out and she doesn't pay (or at least make the offer), I do not, I repeat, I do not call her back. There are certain unwritten rules in dating and this is one of them.

Signs Youre Getting Dumped

Signs Youre Getting Dumped Cover
You can be going along in your relationship without a care in the world. One day, everything is status quo. All pieces are in their rightful place. Then, suddenly, as if overnight, it hits you: your walking papers have been drawn up and are being stamped for approval.

Whether you have chosen to see them or not, the subtle signs you're getting dumped have been there for weeks. Had you thought it through, you would have known it was over when...

SIGNS YOURE GETTING DUMPED #10

A NEW OBSESSION HAS FORMED

And it's not you. In fact, it has replaced you.

Your partner suddenly doesn't have as much free time or mental space for you. This new obsession has taken over all of your partner's thoughts and most of your conversations. However, it clearly doesn't involve you, nor are you being asked to join in.

You are not invited. This is just for them and will not be shared. Ultimately, you're getting dumped and this is the first step towards their independence. The obsession, whatever it may be, is putting some distance between you. The only objective, whether consciously or not, is to push you away - so far that you never come back.

And chances are, it would be the best thing for you.

SIGNS YOURE GETTING DUMPED #9

THEY RADICALLY CHANGE THEIR APPEARANCE

It's clich'e, I know, but when your partner starts to gussy up after a long period of barely looking in the mirror, all of your hairs should stand up on the back of your neck. Take it from me; your significant other is getting ready for the prowl. And you're getting dumped.

It's pretty easy to become so relaxed in your relationship that you become plain lazy. It's hard work keeping up appearances, especially when they see so much of you - especially for women, there's so much more ground to cover. For many of us, once the line has been snagged, there seems to be no point in baiting the hook. Hair grows a little too long, legs are shaved a little less often, six-packs turn into two-packs.

So when that hook is pulled out and shined up again, keep your eyes out for your Dear John/Jane letter.

SIGNS YOURE GETTING DUMPED #8

THEY START SLEEPING AT HOME MORE REGULARLY

Without you.

Suddenly the number of sleepovers in a week dwindles, and you are spending more and more time apart. While this may make you anxious, your partner seems not to notice. When confronted, they make up excuses, claiming fatigue, stress at work, or that it's just too far when it never was before.

But, much like the newly developed obsession (see above), you're facing a not-so subtle expression of their desire to be alone. So let them be. Seems like you're getting dumped either way.

SIGNS YOURE GETTING DUMPED #7

THEY ARE INEXPLICABLY HAPPY AGAIN

After a period of fighting, disinterest, lethargy, and just plain unhappiness, is your partner suddenly happy again? Have you bared witness to unexplainable bouts of whistling, singing, humming?

Is your partner unable to offer a logical excuse for the sudden emotional-180?

If you are suspicious of your significant other's happiness, if you can't find a single change in your relationship to explain it, warning sirens should be going off in your baffled head that you're getting dumped.

While you might want to believe it has something to do with you, there are really only two explanations for the sudden elation: first, your partner's mind is made up, the big decision has been made and you're getting dumped, and, although the difficult conversation still lies ahead, the real stress of the situation is over for them. Second, they've met someone else who has put that stupid grin on their face.

If the only change you feel in your relationship doesn't involve you, it's time to hit the door (not literally; I just mean, walk through it).

SIGNS YOURE GETTING DUMPED #6

THERE IS A GENERAL INDIFFERENCE

Your significant other used to want to be a part of all the different parts of your life, from work to friends. They showed a vested interest, asked questions, seemed to care. Now, they can barely muster up a question. When you run through the day's happenings, they stare with glazed eyes into the distance.

Increasingly, you're spending less time together. The solo-time/together-time ratio is quickly shifting. And, although you're upset about it, your partner seems to welcome the time apart.

If you are dating someone who is generally disinterested and indifferent towards your life, you are dating someone who has one foot firmly out the door. Sadly, it is only a matter of time before the second foot follows.

How To Make Men Fall In Love

How To Make Men Fall In Love Cover
R DON STEELE IS THE FAMED AUTHOR OF" TO DATE YOUNG WOMEN: FOR MEN OVER 35, BODY LANGUAGE "AND" MANS GUIDE TO "AND HAS PROVIDED HIS DATING EXPERTISE IN OVER 400 RADIO INTERVIEWS. WITH A NO-NONSENSE APPROACH TO THE DATING WORLD, R DON STEELE TELLS IT LIKE IT IS AND HELPS MEN FIND THE WOMEN THEY WANT EVERY TIME.

READER QUESTION #1: HOW TO MAKE MEN FALL IN LOVE

I want to know how to make or try to convince a man to fall in love with me.

I've tried eHarmony and they don't have any matches for me. I am abstinent so I think that makes it harder to find love.

Are there any signs to look for that tell if a guy is into me?

"R DON STEELE'S ANSWER:

There are several books with almost that exact title! I suggest you read them. Then make a plan that has concrete steps and a firm schedule to accomplish the goal.

I will tell you the exact same thing I tell men who are in your situation: You have to start somewhere. When you are not dating you radiate loneliness, desperation, and horniness.

LOVE BEGINS WITH LUST

It cannot be helped because you are! Human beings need in this order: Air, water, food, sex, security, love, self actualization. You have the first three. Love begins with lust. It does not begin with romance and flowers and songs and such.

Lust becomes love across time and grand sex with fun times and good conversation. You cannot make anyone love you. Because love just happens.

Therefore, begin with the self-help books that promise you can make someone fall in love with you. Essentially they will say you have to love yourself first. That's nice generic useless but true advice.

Then they will give weight loss, dressing, where to meet, how to talk advice, and other somewhat useful advice. My version is dress well, be slim and trim, go where men are not trying to meet women and do things you enjoy doing"'ve tried eHarmony and they don't have any matches for me.

eHarmony and all the others are foolish at a minimum and frauds at the maximum. Desirable people are not on dating sites. They are out there in the real world with a life!

USE DATING SITES FOR FIRST DATES

You use dating sites to find someone to date and that's a crucial first step. And I say, so what? The goal of using the dating sites is to get yourself used to first dates, which are difficult for us all!

Twenty first dates is what I suggest to guys who are in your situation. They learn how to get ready, and show up on time, how to have a conversation and how to end the date.

I coach this way because most people who are not dating don't know how to do all that without being overly excited and terrified at the same time.

So desensitize yourself via 20 first dates. Why bother? So that when a good candidate comes along, you are not awkward, not tongue tied, not self conscious to the extreme, and all of the other disastrous problems people have when confronting Miss Right or Mr. Right!

Chemistry.com is founded on Helen Fisher's principles. I suggest beginning there. Then try all of them until you have 20 first dates. That should take less than 3 months! That's if you are serious. Which sites you use makes no difference. Get slim and trim and dress well. Learn how to date by dating" am abstinent so I think that makes it harder to find love.

See above. That makes it impossible. Love comes after lust" there any signs to look for that tell if a guy is into me?

Yes. And you know what they are if you have ever seen a chick flick", Waitress, Nights in Rodanthe, and Bridges of Madison "are a few of my favorites.

First Date Meals

First Date Meals Cover
Going out for a meal, usually dinner, is standard first date fare. Of course it is - a chance to talk, an easy out after the meal is finished, and public enough to avoid all creepiness. You've put the time into thinking about how you'll look, how you'll smell, and what you'll say - but have you considered what you'll order?

There are good meals to order on a first date, and there are bad. What you order (not to mention, how you eat it) is an important part of the impression you'll be making on your potential-significant-other.

A first date is the initial screening process, and no matter how lightly you intend to take it, it'll still be lingering in your mind that the person slurping their soup across the table from you could be slurping the same way 20 years from now.

You don't want to look like a grunting pig, but you also want to avoid resembling an anorexic sparrow, so make your choice carefully. Make a good first impression and order food that will maximize your bonding time.

FIRST DATE MEALS #10

OFF THE TABLE DH^oTE

Not only does it show culinary sophistication, it shows that you're neither picky nor high maintenance. Also - as it usually includes a starter, dessert and coffee - it's practical and you'll minimize interruptions from waiters. The Table D'H^ote is also a great chance to try out the specialities of a restaurant, and is usually a good deal.

IT SAYS: I enjoy having the details taken care of by a highly qualified professional.

WARNING: If your partner doesn't order of the Table d'H^ote, they may feel obliged to order a dessert when yours comes.

FIRST DATE MEALS #9

A SHARED FONDUE OR FAJITA DISH

Nothing like playing with your food to show off your light-hearted spirit, and giggling over lost bread chunks is a great way to have a memorable and enjoyable meal with someone new. This is interactive eating - just be sure to remove any rings you may be wearing ahead of time.

IT SAYS: I'm here to have a good time with you! Let's not take ourselves too seriously. And hands off my broccoli!

WARNING: These can be messy, and blood may be spilled over the last tiger shrimp.

FIRST DATE MEALS #8

TAPAS

An entire meal of appetizers? Spanish appetizers? Absolutamente. Not only are these hot and cold dishes exotic and delicious, but they require less of your attention than a full meal plunked in front of you, leaving your mind free to concentrate on your dinner partner.

This is also excellent if you tend to feel nervous eating around new people - olive spread and hummus are way less of a commitment than a lobster or a steak.

IT SAYS: I value diversity in eating as in life.

WARNING: It's really, really easy to drink too much wine over tapas.

FIRST DATE MEALS #7

SUSHI

Apart from being tasty and really good for you, sushi comes in a huge variety of forms and flavors. It's still exotic and modern - but there are options for even the pickiest of palates. Not into raw fish? Have some fresh and delicious cucumber and avocado rolls or deep-fried tempura shrimp.

Also, sushi restaurants are generally clean, elegant, and have a minimum of screaming 5-year-olds.

IT SAYS: I have excellent manual dexterity and an adventure seeking nature.

WARNING: Two words: Fish breath.

FIRST DATE MEALS #6

COBB SALAD

A little retro, a little quirky, and full of all the good stuff you want in a meal. You've got your veggies, you've got your protein and you've got your cheesy goodness. It's ordering a salad for dinner without looking like a nervous 17-year-old.

IT SAYS: I'm a traditionalist. What was good enough for my folks is good enough for me. And aren't those itty-bitty corn on the cobs cute?

WARNING: If the eggs aren't pre-sliced, eating them neatly can be a challenge, and you may wind up with yolk crumbs on your blazer.

The Bigot

The Bigot Cover
"A narrow mind and a fat head invariably come on the same person"

Hilary Hinton "Zig" Ziglar (born 6 November 1926) an American author, salesperson, and motivational speaker.

If you liked the last one, you're gonna love this horror story...

Okay, I admit it. I found Mitch on Facebook. He popped up as a "mutual friend" or whatever they're called. He looked gorgeous in his profile picture. So I messaged him and told him. We wrote back and forth for about ten days. He seemed depressed, revealing a lot about his inner turmoil and then questioning why the hell he was telling me about it. He claimed he wanted to go to law school but, at 33, felt it might be too late. He was spending his days popping Ritalin, he admitted, so he can focus on studying for his LSAT. I was a little concerned about the dark tone of his writing but I was curious to know more.

On our first date, Mitch told me about his little sister from his dad's second marriage. He was there for her birth seven years ago and he said he was looking forward to being a dad. He was sweet. We kissed. It was nice. Waiting outside for a cab with him that night, one passed us by. He threw his hands up in the air and said with a smile: "What are we? Black?" Hmmm, that's a weird joke, I thought. Seriously?
